dream & true north

dream & true north is a quartet for three dancers, Lois Chan, Sarah Hopkin and Mélissa Roy, and one musician, Kathryn Patricia Cobbler.

dream & true north draws on rhythms, forms and textures of touch and more specifically, its absence, to navigate the rollercoaster of emotions that surfaces when the entire planet is plunged into uncertainty and fear with no clear picture of the future. Vocabulary inspired by lived experience and adaptation works to investigate the continuous push and pull between living in fear and yearning for “normality”, and creates a heightened sense of reality that is brought to light through the performers’ relationships to each other and their environment. As the work evolves dream & true north exposes how each performer reacts to and is affected differently by this heightened environment and the interactions that result.

dream & true north was initially created for and through Zoom with the support of TACTICS in 2020. It was then expanded through an in-person residence at Ottawa Dance Directive later that year. In 2021 dream & true north was featured in the National Arts Centre’s CAPSULE dance video series.

/
