Mélanie Bennett

Mélanie is a dance and theatre artist who most often creates on the unceded and traditional territories of the anichnabe and haudinonchaune nations. She left Turtle Island to study, travel and dance in France, Japan, Cameroon, Marocco and India. Trained at York University and Ballet Creole in Toronto, Melanie acknowledges the teachings of David Earle, Santee Smith (Kaha:wi Dance Theatre), Majdi Bou-Mater (MTSpace), Natalie Gan (Hong Kong Exile) and her aunt Carole Leclair (Métis Women’s Circle).  Mélanie (B.A, B.Ed, M.P.A, M.A, M.Ed candidate) is the cofounder of Arts d’oeuvres, the first francophone arts festival in Kitchener-Waterloo. She has choreographed, directed, performed and (co)produced La Farce de Maître Pathelin, Huis clos, La leçon and original works including L’Autre histoire de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Le bagne des femmes, The Great Elephant Walk, Entre un Solstice et la Saint-Jean, Olympe de Gouges, Révolutionnaire and D’Anse aux méduses. She has performed in productions by Tanya Williams (Friends of the Floor, Kitchener), Jean Assamoa (Akwaba, Toronto), Desiree Dunbar and Vanessa Goodman (Interplay Projects, Vancouver), Naoko Itoh (Tokyo), Elizabeth Emond Stevenson (TAKE UP SPACE), Chelsea Passmore (Ottawa) and Allison O’Connor (This is Trophy) in partnership with the NAC.

Mélanie has collaborated with TAKE UP SPACE as a performer in TAKE UP SPACE + MOONFRUITS and as performer/choreographer in Theresa’s poem and little dances / petites danses.

Mélanie est une artiste de danse et du théâtre qui crée le plus souvent sur les territoires non-cédés et traditionnels des nations anichnabées et haudinonchaunées.  Elle a quitté l’Ile de la Tortue pour étudier, travailler et danser en France, Japon, Cameroun, Maroc et en Inde. Formée d’abord à l’Université York et au Ballet Creole de Toronto, Mélanie reconnaît les enseignements de David Earle, Santee Smith (Kaha:wi Dance Theatre), Majdi Bou-Mater (MTSpace), Natalie Gan (Hong Kong Exile) et de sa tante Carole Leclair (Cercle des femmes métisses).  Mélanie (B.A, B.Ed, M.P.A, M.A, candidate M.Ed) fut la co-fondatrice d’Arts d’œuvres, premier festival d’arts francophones à Kitchener-Waterloo. Elle était chorégraphe, metteure en scène, interprète et responsable de la (co)production de La Farce de Maître Pathelin, Huis clos, La leçon et de spectacles originaux dont L’Autre histoire de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Le bagne des femmes, The Great Elephant Walk, Entre un Solstice et la Saint-Jean, Olympe de Gouges, Révolutionnaire, D’Anse aux méduses, parmi d’autres.  Elle a interprété des spectacles de Tanya Williams (Friends of the Floor, Kitchener), Jean Assamoa (Akwaba, Toronto), Desiree Dunbar et Vanessa Goodman (Interplay Projects, Vancouver), Naoko Itoh (Tokyo), Elizabeth Emond-Stevenson (TAKE UP SPACE) et Chelsea Passmore (Ottawa) et Allison O’Connor (This is Trophy) en partenariat avec le CNA.
