W(WE)

W(WE) is a physical, funny, theatrical pop up dance experience for 5 performers. Inspired in part by WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and a desire to subvert and play with female and wrestling stereotypes, the performers battle against elements tangible (each other, the space) and intangible (pay equity, hierarchical power structures, the male gaze), eventually uniting their powers together to conquer injustices as a superteam. W(WE) is part flash mob, part dance theatre sprinkled with humour, absurdity and a dose of truth. The performers interact with each other and the audience as they move through space. W(WE) is created and performed through an intersectional feminist lens- from how the choreographer worked with the performers in the studio, to the material that is created, to the performance itself and how the performers interact with the audience. W(WE) deals with power, patriarchy and intersectionality in a fresh, zany, physical, inclusive, surprising and somewhat disruptive, way.

W(WE) was presented at Fresh Meat festival in 2021. The creation process was funded by the City of Ottawa.
